The Opposites

Order the pisco at The Opposites and the bartender asks which version — one founder's or the other's. The Hollywood Road bar just climbed 26 places to No. 54 on Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026, in a year Hong Kong put seven bars on the main list.

One base spirit, two builds, depending on who's behind the bar

Order the pisco cocktail at The Opposites and the answer comes back as a question: which version? One founder's Soya Sour runs pisco against passion fruit juice, ginkgo syrup and fresh ginger, then tops it with a siphoned soy milk-and-ginger foam and a matcha rim. The other founder's Scoop Me Up takes the same base spirit somewhere else — camellia tea, centrifuged pink guava cordial, a white tea and guava foam — and serves it in an ice-cream-cone-shaped glass finished with a pineapple-scented smoke bubble (South China Morning Post, 11 Feb 2025). Same spirit, same room, two different bartenders answering the same brief. That's the whole pitch in a single order.

"Create unity with opposites" is the operating principle, not a slogan on the wall

The bar's own framing is that its two founders work in opposing registers — one theatrical, one classicist — and the sixteen-drink standard menu is built in pairs so both readings sit side by side rather than resolve into one house style. Each pair shares a spirit or a technique and is pushed in a different direction by whichever founder made it (theopposites.hk, checked 16 Aug 2026; The Beat Asia, 25 Jun 2025). The bar refreshes this list periodically rather than locking it: its August 2025 update paired new dual takes on the Sidecar, the Espresso Martini and the Paloma, the same one-brief-two-answers structure applied to three different classics (DrinkCollectiv, 1 Jul 2025).

"We have always had the shared goal of reintroducing timeless cocktails to a broader audience, especially in a market that has been trending toward ingenious styles," one of the founders has said of the partnership (Tatler Asia, 23 May 2024).

The room splits the same way the drinks do

Sixty seats — 48 in the lounge, 12 at the counter — sit inside an Art Deco basement built around smokey amber and royal blue, the two colours standing in for each bartender's approach. The two bar stations are deliberately unmatched: one founder's side runs lab equipment built for centrifuging and infusion, the other's side runs a pristine line of bottles and classic glassware built for precision rather than spectacle (alphamen.asia, checked 16 Aug 2026). It's a small detail that does more work than the colour scheme: you can tell which founder built a drink before it's even poured, just by watching which station it comes from.

The Opposites climbed 26 places to No. 54 on Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026

The bar placed No. 80 on the 2025 extended list and moved to No. 54 in 2026 — a 26-place jump in a single year, and one of the larger climbs on this year's 51–100. The extended list was published on 14 July 2026, ahead of the main awards ceremony held in Macau on 28 July (Time Out Hong Kong, 14 Jul 2026; The World's 50 Best, 14 Jul 2026). Two other Hong Kong bars made the same extended list: The Savory Project at No. 60, and Tell Camellia, a re-entry, at No. 81.

Its founders had already spent a decade building Hong Kong's cocktail scene before opening this one

The two co-founders worked together for years at Quinary before opening The Opposites in July 2024 — one as the bar's public face, the other as its bar manager. One co-founder won the Diageo World Class Hong Kong & Macau title in 2015 with a cocktail called The Sound of Ciroc, then went on to found Draft Land and Chako. The other co-founder won the same title two years later, in 2017 (The Drinks Business, 8 Jun 2015; DrinkCollectiv, 1 Jul 2025). Between them, that's two of the region's biggest bartending-competition titles behind one bar — the kind of credential this scene reads closely and most drinkers walk past.

The current menu runs on film and music through 30 September

The Opposites changes its seasonal list on a set clock, and the one running now — through 30 September 2026 — takes cinema and music as its brief. The Teahouse Old Fashioned infuses cognac with narcissus tea, then adds winter melon syrup, grapefruit and walnut bitters under a candied tangerine garnish. Rhapsody in Blue, named for the Gershwin piece and pulling from the 1922 film Blood and Sand, layers glutinous rice pu-erh, clarified blueberry, balsamic vinegar, Pedro Ximénez sherry, maraschino, Yuk Bing Siu — a pork fat-macerated Cantonese rice wine — and Korean soju. Walking On Sunshine, the non-alcoholic option, runs lacto-fermented carrot, calamansi and nasturtium against Almave's non-alcoholic agave spirit, with reposado tequila offered as an add-in (Spirited Asia, 15 Jul 2026). None of the four listed drinks carry a published price anywhere we could find — ask at the bar.

Seven Hong Kong bars sit on Asia's 50 Best Bars' main list this year — this one made the extended one

Bar Leone became the first Hong Kong bar named World's Best Bar in October 2025, and Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 put seven Hong Kong venues on its main fifty: Bar Leone at No. 3, Gokan at No. 22, COA at No. 24, Mius at No. 36, ARGO at No. 37, Montana at No. 47 and Penicillin at No. 49 (Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026, ceremony 28 Jul 2026). The Opposites, The Savory Project and Tell Camellia round out the picture on the extended 51–100. Mius and Montana didn't exist in mid-2025 and both ranked inside Asia's top 50 within twelve months of opening — which is the best available evidence that the city's cocktail scene is adding depth, not coasting on a handful of flagships. A bar climbing 26 places in a field this crowded fits the same pattern.

Walk-ins only, five nights a week that run late

The Opposites sits in a basement at LG/F, Hilltop Plaza, 49 Hollywood Road, Central. It's open Sunday to Thursday, 5pm to 1am, and Friday and Saturday, 5pm to 2am, with last orders 45 minutes before close. There's no reservation system — it's walk-in only, every night, so a wait on a Friday isn't a booking failure, it's the policy. For groups or questions, the bar lists a phone line (+852 2711 0038) and an email address (info@theopposites.hk), though the door itself still runs first-come (theopposites.hk, checked 16 Aug 2026). Go for the seasonal menu if the theme interests you; go for the Soya Sour and Scoop Me Up pair if you'd rather compare the founders directly. Either way, order both versions if there are two people at the table — that's the point of the room.
