Versus
Volar ran this basement for seventeen years before it closed in 2021. Versus reopened the same room under a new name and made no attempt to replace what was there — it rents the two spaces out nightly to whoever has a crowd, from trance crews to Bollywood promoters to the official Clockenflap afterparty. Same stairs. Different night, every night.

Volar ran this basement for seventeen years, until 2021
Before it was Versus, this basement was Volar — one of Lan Kwai Fong's defining underground rooms for seventeen years, from 2004 until it formally closed in 2021. Two rooms, an industrial-chic basement design, and a booking policy serious enough that it still turns up on every "best of old Hong Kong nightlife" list written since. Volar's operators didn't stay in the basement when they moved on — the same team resurfaced twenty-six floors up, in California Tower, as FAYY. What they left behind was the room itself: the stairs, the two spaces, the address at 38–44 D'Aguilar Street that a generation of Hong Kong clubbers can still find with their eyes closed.
That's the fact worth sitting with before anything else here. Versus isn't a tribute act and it isn't a revival. It's a different operation trading out of the same physical basement, and the two are easy to confuse if you didn't know Volar.
Versus has been trading in the same room since at least September 2023
Versus has been trading in this basement since at least September 2023 — "at least" because that's the earliest trace of the current operation we can confirm, not necessarily its opening night. What happened in the basement between Volar's 2021 closure and the first documented Versus night isn't public record, and we're not going to guess at it. What is documented: a live Instagram account, an events history running from mid-2024 through into 2026, and a listing as a ticketing host on Lan Kwai Fong Group's own platform. The room didn't sit empty for two years. It just didn't get written about.
The two rooms are rented out, not programmed in-house
Versus doesn't book its own nights. It has two rooms in the basement and rents them to promoter collectives, so the programming changes with whoever's paying for the room that week rather than with a resident DJ or a house sound. That's the opposite of how most of Lan Kwai Fong's design-led clubs operate, where one team controls the booking, the door and the brand top to bottom.
A basement this well known, in a building this central, shouldn't be this hard to find information about. That gap isn't Versus failing to market itself — it's what happens when a room decides to be a landlord instead of a headline act.
It's also, structurally, an honest description of what a lot of Lan Kwai Fong actually is: an address that outlives whoever's currently paying rent on it, handed from operator to operator, each one building a different night on the same stairs.
BOLLYVERSE has booked the room at least three times since August 2025
The clearest through-line in the room's recent history is BOLLYVERSE, a Bollywood party series that's booked Versus repeatedly — "Spirit of Freedom" on 16 August 2025, a follow-up on 20 September 2025, and "An Electrifying Bollywood Night" running 22–23 November 2025 from 10pm to 4am. That's not a one-off booking. It's a promoter who keeps coming back to the same room, which in a rental model is the closest thing to a residency Versus has.
BOLLYVERSE serves Hong Kong's South Asian nightlife scene directly, and it's worth naming as exactly that rather than folding it into a generic "international night" description. The city's Bollywood and South Asian party circuit gets almost no coverage in English or Cantonese nightlife media, and a room that keeps handing its basement to that crowd on a recurring basis is doing something most of Lan Kwai Fong's venues never bother to.
The door price is set by whoever's renting that night
Because the room turns over promoter to promoter, the door isn't set by a single house policy — it moves with whoever's running that particular night. A trance crew's door, a Bollywood party's door and a Cantopop night's door won't land on the same number, and none of them hold still long enough to print reliably here. The honest way to check what you'll pay at Versus on a given night is the promoter's own listing, same day — Eventbrite, the Lan Kwai Fong Group ticketing page, or the venue's own Instagram.
There's no venue website, and no listing on Resident Advisor
Versus has no venue website and no listing on Resident Advisor, which is unusual for a room with this address and this history. What it does have is an Instagram account and a host page on Lan Kwai Fong Group's own ticketing platform, where some — not all — of the room's events surface. Individual promoters, BOLLYVERSE included, also list separately on Eventbrite. There's no single place that aggregates everything happening in the basement in a given week, which means the honest answer to "what's on at Versus" is: check more than one place, or ask someone who already knows.
Versus was still trading in April 2026
The room was still active as of 17 April 2026, when Lan Kwai Fong Group listed Versus among the participating venues for its Incredible India Festival, a single-night event across the district. That's the most recent confirmed date we have of the basement still operating under the Versus name — the same stairs, the same two rooms, a different promoter's name on the door depending on the week.

Frequently asked
- What's on at Versus?
- It changes night to night. The two rooms are rented to different promoter collectives rather than programmed by the venue, so a single month can run trance, UK bass, Cantopop, the official Clockenflap afterparty and BOLLYVERSE's recurring Bollywood nights. There's no published venue calendar — check the promoter's own listing or Versus's Instagram before you go.
- Is Versus the same club as Volar?
- No. Volar closed in 2021 after seventeen years and its team moved to FAYY, twenty-six floors up in California Tower. Versus is a different operation trading out of the same physical basement — the room, not the brand, carried over.
- Where is Versus?
- In the basement under 38–44 D'Aguilar Street in Lan Kwai Fong — the address that used to be Volar.
- How do I find tickets or check what's on at Versus?
- There's no venue website and no Resident Advisor listing. Individual promoters — including BOLLYVERSE — list their own nights on Eventbrite, and some events surface on Lan Kwai Fong Group's ticketing platform. Versus's own Instagram is the most consistent single source.
- What is BOLLYVERSE?
- A Bollywood party series that has booked Versus repeatedly since August 2025, serving Hong Kong's South Asian nightlife scene. It's the closest thing to a recurring night the room has, in a venue otherwise handed to a different promoter each week.
