Eight Kitchens Hong Kong Keeps Running Past Midnight

Every bar in this city runs on its own clock, and none of them serve food. Here's where Hong Kong actually eats after the bars close — cha chaan teng, dai pai dong, congee and the handful of kitchens that don't stop — checked district by district this week, with anything we couldn't confirm left out.

Eight Kitchens Hong Kong Keeps Running Past Midnight

It's 2am. The bar's called last orders, the group chat is arguing about where next, and eight of you need something that isn't another drink. This is the actual test of a Hong Kong district — not what's on the cocktail list, but what's still got a wok going once the bars switch off. Cha chaan teng, dai pai dong, congee shops, the odd noodle stall that never bothered installing a closing time: this is the infrastructure that makes a night out survivable, and it gets a fraction of the coverage the bars do. The bars get the campaigns and the queue outside; the kitchens get whoever's still hungry once the campaigns are over. We went looking for what's actually still cooking. Every hour below was checked this week. Anything we couldn't confirm was still open, we left out.

Knutsford Terrace's dim sum hall never actually closes

Lin Heung Lau opened a second branch in 2025 at the entrance to Knutsford Terrace in Tsim Sha Tsui — two floors, over 9,000 square feet, sitting right where the district's bar strip starts. It operates 24 hours, closing for exactly one hour a day for cleaning — a genuine sit-down room, not a hallway stall. The carts roll the same way at 4am as they do at 4pm: pork dumplings, chicken feet, custard buns, wheeled table to table off steel trolleys. If the bars on Knutsford Terrace close before you're done, the room that doesn't is two minutes' walk in front of them.

Temple Street's food outlasts its trinket stalls

Temple Street Night Market gets going after 6pm, and the fortune tellers and karaoke pitches thin out as the night wears on — but the food doesn't pack up with them. On Ning Po Street, a few minutes off the market in Jordan, Block 18 Doggie's Noodle runs its stall 24 hours: rice noodles in soup, siu mai, fish balls, an order that costs less than a single round at most bars down the hill. On Temple Street itself, Hing Kee Restaurant keeps its claypot rice going to midnight, with a lunch service and a 5:30pm restart — turn up at 4pm expecting dinner and you'll find the pots cold. None of it runs on one set of hours, which is the point: treat every stall as its own business, because it is.

Sham Shui Po's dai pai dong close earlier than everywhere else on this list

Sham Shui Po runs one of the city's last working dai pai dong clusters, and it's worth knowing this before building a night around it: Oi Man Sang trades 4:30pm to 11pm, Shum Shum Desserts 3pm to 11:45pm. Neither is chasing a 3am crowd. These stalls are built around dinner and the market traders who work the surrounding streets by day, not the after-party. Go before 11, not after — the district earns its name on flavour, not hours, and pretending otherwise just means standing outside a shuttered stall with seven other people.

Lan Kwai Fong's cha chaan teng fix is younger than most of its bars

Tsui Wah opened its Lan Kwai Fong branch in October 2024, and it now runs to midnight on the same block that supplies most of the crowd who'll need it. It's an odd role for a name best known for milk tea and instant noodles with luncheon meat — anchoring the exit route of Hong Kong's most concentrated bar strip — but it's the option the neighbourhood didn't have before 2024. A few doors up the hill, Yurakucho Izakaya keeps its own kitchen open to 2am on Friday and Saturday, giving SoHo's late crowd a second option without leaving the block.

Causeway Bay and Wan Chai's dai pai dong strip runs three hours past last call

Kui Kee Seafood Restaurant on Bowrington Road, sitting on the Wan Chai–Causeway Bay border under the flyover, does salt-and-pepper squid and stir-fried clams to around 3am most nights. A short walk into Causeway Bay proper, Under Bridge Spicy Crab — open-air seating, the crab dish it's named for — trades to 1am. Plastic stools, communal tables, and a wok that doesn't stop: it's built for a group of eight showing up unannounced, not a party of two with a reservation. Between the two spots, the neighbourhoods' bar strips get a dai pai dong option each without anyone needing to book ahead.

Kennedy Town rewards whoever's still standing at 3am

Sun Hing Restaurant on Smithfield Road opens its doors at 3am and closes at 4pm — a schedule it built decades ago around market porters and has never changed. The dim sum carts start rolling the moment the doors open, unmarked, wheeled table to table, and the room fills with an odd mix of night-shift workers, cab drivers finishing up and whoever's still out from Central. It's less a late-night option than an early-morning one, but if the night's still running, it's there.

Not every '24-hour' cha chaan teng actually is one

Hong Kong's cha chaan teng carry a reputation for never closing that the format hasn't fully earned in recent years. Honolulu Coffee Shop's Wan Chai flagship — close to 80 years on Hennessy Road — closed for good on 1 March 2026, and it isn't the only long-running name to have trimmed hours or shut a branch in the past two years. Treat any '24 hours' sign as a claim to check, not a fact to plan a night around — branch hours vary within the same chain, and they change without much notice. This is why every hour in this guide carries the week we checked it, not the year the restaurant opened.

A '24 hours' sign painted on a shopfront a decade ago is not a fact about tonight. Every hour in this guide was checked this week — treat every hour printed anywhere else as a rumour until you've checked it yourself.

Frequently asked

What time do Hong Kong's dai pai dong actually close?
It varies a lot by district. Sham Shui Po's stalls wind down by 11pm to 11:45pm, while Causeway Bay's Under Bridge Spicy Crab runs to 1am and Wan Chai's Kui Kee Seafood Restaurant trades to around 3am. Check the specific stall before you go.
Where can I get dim sum after 2am in Hong Kong?
Lin Heung Lau's Knutsford Terrace branch in Tsim Sha Tsui runs 24 hours. Sun Hing Restaurant in Kennedy Town opens its dim sum carts at 3am, closing at 4pm.
Is Temple Street Night Market open all night?
No. The market itself gets going after 6pm and thins out as the night wears on. Nearby, Block 18 Doggie's Noodle on Ning Po Street in Jordan runs a separate 24-hour stall, and Hing Kee Restaurant's claypot rice on Temple Street itself goes to midnight.
Which cha chaan teng is open in Lan Kwai Fong after midnight?
Tsui Wah's Lan Kwai Fong branch, open since October 2024, runs to midnight.
Are Hong Kong's cha chaan teng chains reliably open 24 hours?
Not uniformly. Branch hours vary within the same chain and change without much notice — Honolulu Coffee Shop's near-80-year-old Wan Chai flagship closed in March 2026. Check the specific address, not the brand's reputation.
