Hong Kong's Visitors Are Spending Less on Shopping, More on Culture

26.71 Million Visitors Arrived in the First Half of 2026, Up 13 Percent

Hong Kong recorded 26.71 million visitor arrivals in the first six months of 2026, up 13% on the same period last year, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board. Mainland arrivals rose 16%; foreign arrivals rose 5%. Full-year 2025 closed at 49.9 million, itself up 12% on 2024, with mainland visitors making up 76% of that total. The government's target is 56 million visitors by 2027 — a number the current run rate puts within reach, if the second half holds pace with the first.

Visitors Are Staying Shorter and Spending Roughly the Same Per Head

Average overnight stay slipped to 3.1 nights in 2025, down from 3.2 the year before. Overnight visitor spending per head held close to flat — HK$5,503 in 2025, a forecast HK$5,530 for 2026. Same-day visitors, who make up the bulk of the 74% who now arrive by land rather than air or sea, spend around HK$1,000 each. That land-heavy, same-day-heavy mix is a lower-margin visitor than the one Hong Kong's tourism economy was built around a decade ago, and arrival growth alone doesn't change that math.

Tourism Minister Rosanna Law Named the Shift Directly in July

"A structural shift in visitor consumption patterns, moving from a previous focus on shopping to a greater emphasis on culture and experiences," Law said in July 2026. The receipts back her up in places the shopping data doesn't reach. Bar Leone was named the World's Best Bar in October 2025 — the first time for a Hong Kong bar, at a ceremony held at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 lists seven Hong Kong bars across eleven awards. Michelin's 2026 guide counts 77 starred restaurants across Hong Kong and Macau, up from 76. Kai Tak Stadium sold 1.25 million tickets in its debut year, third-highest in the world and first in Asia.

The Same Shift Shows Up as a Routing Problem Inside the Restaurant Sector

Hong Kong restaurant receipts rose 1.1% in value in the first quarter of 2026, to HK$28.4 billion, with non-Chinese restaurants up 2.8%. Bars fell 4.0% over the same period. Read alone, that decline looks like softening demand for a night out. Read against the sector total, it reads differently: bars are losing share inside a category that grew. The money hasn't left going-out — it has moved toward the rooms with a Michelin star or a world ranking behind them, and away from the ones without one.
