Hong Kong Lost a Tenth of Its Bars in 2025. The Survivors Are Smaller.

Roughly 120 bars closed in the first half of 2025 while Bar Leone became World's Best Bar and seven Hong Kong bars made Asia's 50 Best. SCMP's 2026 trend read names what's replacing the losses: neighbourhood over spectacle.

Hong Kong Lost a Tenth of Its Bars in 2025. The Survivors Are Smaller.

A tenth of the city's bars closed just as the top of the scene hit record highs

About 120 of Hong Kong's roughly 1,200 licensed bars closed in the first half of 2025, close to one in ten, according to the Hong Kong Bar and Club Association. Chairman Chin Chun-wing told The Standard that nearly 80% of the bars that survived had to negotiate rent cuts of 20 to 30% to stay open (The Standard, 4 Feb 2026). The same period produced the opposite headline at the top of the market. Bar Leone became the first Hong Kong bar named World's Best Bar, and Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 put seven Hong Kong bars on its main list, with eleven awards across the city in total (World's 50 Best Bars, Jul 2026). Both are true at once, and the second doesn't cancel the first out. It's the same market sorting itself, hard, into rooms worth a queue and rooms nobody's coming back to. The closures aren't a verdict on nightlife. They're a verdict on the format that stopped working.

SCMP names the direction: comfort over prestige, character over spectacle

In a bar-trends piece published 15 January 2026, the South China Morning Post identified the format winning that sort: neighbourhood bars built on "simplicity and character, with an interior design that isn't too elaborate," no dress code, and drinks a stranger can order without a briefing (SCMP, 15 Jan 2026). The piece names Bar Leone, Quinary, Draft Land, The Opposites, Socio, Sugar King and Mius as current examples. That's a world-best cocktail bar, a long-running Central fixture, a Taiwanese cocktails-on-tap import on Wyndham Street, and several younger rooms that share almost nothing in décor and everything in restraint. The common thread isn't a look, a designer or a budget line. It's a refusal to make the room the point, when for the better part of a decade the room was exactly the point.

The reason is generational, and it was measured before it showed up here

SCMP's piece traces the shift to reporting from Time, Fortune and Drinks International on Gen Z drinking less than the generations before it, and swapping the evening bar crawl for a daytime one, coffee events in place of cocktail ones. Hong Kong doesn't have its own published figure yet for how much less this city's twenty-somethings are drinking, and none should be assumed here. What's checkable is the format response: the bars the trade press keeps naming are built for a shorter, lower-proof, lower-formality night, and the bars opening now are opening smaller, with fewer seats and less spent on the fit-out. A bar built to impress a camera and a bar built to be walked into twice a week are no longer the same brief.

The clearest evidence is how fast the small rooms are climbing

Two results this year make the case better than any trend piece. Mius, which didn't exist as a venue in mid-2025, placed inside Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 main list within a year of opening. The Opposites climbed 26 places on the same list's extended 51-100 tier, to number 54 (World's 50 Best Bars, Jul 2026). Neither result depends on scale, spectacle or a headline budget. Both depend on being good at one legible thing, consistently enough that a room of international judges noticed within a single cycle. That's the shift SCMP is describing, and for a city that lost a tenth of its bars in six months, it's the more useful story: the format that's replacing the losses is cheaper to open, harder to fake, and it's already winning on the only scoreboard that's public.
