Four Central Bars for Four Kinds of Date
We run some of these rooms. Here's which one to pick for the date that might end in forty minutes, the one you want to stretch out, and the one that comes after dinner — sorted by what the room does to a conversation, not by how it ranks.

Bar Leone Doesn't Take Reservations, Which Makes It the Easiest Room in Central to Leave After One Drink
Bar Leone, at 15 Bridges Street in Central, is the World's Best Bar 2025 — the first time a Hong Kong room has taken the title, and the ceremony was held in this city. It runs on a strict no-reservations policy: you walk in, you find a spot at the counter, you order. That single fact does more for a first date than any amount of design. There's no table held in your name, no host to explain yourself to on the way out, no booking you're stuck honouring if the conversation runs dry after one round. Open 5pm daily to late — order two drinks, and if it isn't working, you leave the way you came in: unbooked.
Mius and The Old Man Sit You at a Table, Not Across a Service Bar
Mius, on Gough Street in NoHo, is bartender Shelley Tai's first solo room — mid-century modern, neutral colours, one or two design pieces instead of a wall of them. She built it, by her own account, to be comfortable to be in and easy for anyone to read, which in practice means low enough volume that neither of you is raising a voice across the table. The Old Man, a few minutes away on Aberdeen Street, runs the same principle through a different filter: a Hemingway-themed cocktail list where every drink carries a story, open to 2am on weeknights and midnight on Sundays. Both give you a seat rather than a rail to stand at — the difference between a bar you pass through and one you sit down in for the date where you've already decided you want to keep talking.
The Diplomat Runs Two Rooms, So You Choose How Loud the Night Gets
The Diplomat, inside the H Code building in Central, is built by mixologist John Nugent as two separate bars under one address — not two floors of the same room, two distinct ones. That matters late, after 11pm, when one of you wants a nightcap and neither wants a crowd: you pick the quieter of the two rather than hoping the whole venue settles down. It's the room for the date that comes after dinner has already worked.
All Four Sit Inside the Same Stretch of Central and NoHo
Bridges Street to Aberdeen Street to Gough Street to H Code is a walk, not a taxi ride. That matters because a read on a first date changes in real time: what starts at Bar Leone's counter can move to Mius's table if it's going well, without either of you calling a car. It also tracks a real shift in how Hong Kong bars are being built this year — smaller, quieter, neighbourhood-first rooms over spectacle ones. In the words of Tastings Group's Antonio Lai: "simplicity and character, with an interior design that isn't too elaborate." A date doesn't need a stage. It needs a room where you can hear the other person.

Frequently asked
- Do any of these bars take reservations?
- Bar Leone runs walk-in only — no reservations, by design. Mius, The Old Man and The Diplomat are smaller rooms; call ahead or check their social accounts before a weekend, since hours and booking policies shift.
- What if the first bar turns out too loud or too full?
- All four sit within a short walk of each other across Central and NoHo — Bridges Street to Aberdeen Street to Gough Street to H Code. Moving to the next one doesn't need a taxi.
- Which one suits a first date that might not go anywhere?
- Bar Leone. Counter seating, no booking to cancel, and one drink each doesn't commit either of you to a second.
