Hong Kong Put Ten Bars On Asia's 50 Best 2026 — Two Weren't Open A Year Earlier

Bar Leone, Mius and eight other Hong Kong bars carried the city through the region's biggest cocktail list this July. Two of the names on it opened in the same twelve months Hong Kong's own bar receipts fell four percent. Both numbers are real.

Hong Kong Put Ten Bars On Asia's 50 Best 2026 — Two Weren't Open A Year Earlier

There is no reservations line at Bar Leone, and there never has been. The recipes are posted online for anyone to copy, the walls are wood-panelled with vintage photographs and AS Roma memorabilia, and the room runs on the idea it opened with in 2023: a neighbourhood cocktail bar, not a destination one. That idea won. On 8 October 2025, at a ceremony held at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, Bar Leone was named The World's Best Bar — the first time a Hong Kong address has taken the global No. 1, and the first time the ceremony crowning it has been held in the city it was crowning.

"Bar Leone was born with the idea of being a neighbourhood cocktail bar. We will never change that ethos."

Nine months later, the city had to show that win wasn't a one-room story.

Hong Kong took seven seats on Asia's main list and eleven awards in total

Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 was announced on 28 July, at Wynn Palace in Macau — the region's own ceremony, distinct from the global one, and this year held off Hong Kong soil. It made no difference to the result. Hope & Sesame in Guangzhou took the outright No. 1 spot, but seven Hong Kong bars filled the ranks underneath it: Bar Leone at No. 3, Gokan at No. 22, Coa at No. 24, Mius at No. 36, Argo at No. 37, Montana at No. 47 and Penicillin at No. 49. Add the extended list and the special-category wins — Coa's Rémy Martin Legend of the List award, Mius's SevenRooms Best Bar Design award and the Altos Bartenders' Bartender award for Mius's founder among them — and the city's total for the night came to eleven honours across ten named venues.

Two of the newest names didn't have an address a year earlier

Mius opened on 27 August 2025, on Gough Street, in what used to be a home-goods store — the kind Mius's founder says she used to pass on her way to shifts at Quinary, before she left Hong Kong to work in Singapore. She signed the lease for it remotely and finished the build in under eight months. Eleven months later, Mius sat inside Asia's top 50 in its own right, and its founder carried the Altos Bartenders' Bartender award off the same stage. Montana opened three weeks earlier, in August 2025, on Hollywood Road — a two-floor Cuban room with a pink counter downstairs and photographs of Blondie and Gloria Estefan upstairs, built by Bar Leone's founder and his co-founder. Hong Kong's own investment agency held the opening up as evidence, in its own words, that the city "continues to attract world-class talent." Eleven months after opening, Montana ranked No. 47.

The same bartender is behind the No. 3 bar and the No. 47 one

That isn't incidental. Bar Leone's founder co-founded Montana in 2025 too, which puts one operator behind two of this year's seven Hong Kong entries, at opposite ends of the ranking, inside two years. It's the kind of detail a visitor scanning a list would miss and an operator wouldn't: the person who built the best bar in the world came back and built a top-50 bar again, in the same city, before the first one had finished collecting its trophies. Bar Leone, for its part, opened a Shanghai outpost in the second half of 2025 — carrying the formula outward rather than sitting still with it.

The receipts tell a smaller room a different story

None of that shows up in the government's numbers, and we won't pretend it does. Hong Kong's restaurant sector took in HK$28.4 billion in the first quarter of 2026, up 1.1% on the same quarter a year earlier — a sector that grew. Non-Chinese restaurants did better still, up 2.8%. Bars did not: receipts down 4.0% in value and 3.9% in volume, the steepest fall of any category the Census and Statistics Department tracks. The Hong Kong Bar and Club Association put a figure on what that looks like at street level — about 120 bars, roughly a tenth of the city's total, closed in the first half of 2025 alone, against an ordinary year's 70 to 80 new openings by the association's own estimate. Both of these are true of the same twelve months: a sector-wide contraction in bar receipts, and a Hong Kong address taking the best-in-the-world trophy for the first time in the award's history.

The extended list is where next year's headline is already sitting

Three more Hong Kong rooms sit just below the main fifty, and each carries a different part of the story. The Opposites climbed to No. 54 on the extended list, up 26 places on its prior ranking. The Savory Project — built by the team behind Coa, running savoury and umami-forward cocktails rather than sweet ones, on Staunton Street — landed at No. 60. Tell Camellia, the city's tea-focused cocktail room, re-entered the extended list at No. 81 after dropping off it the year before. None of the three cracked the top fifty this year. Any one of them could next year — the list has already shown twice, with Mius and Montana, how fast a Hong Kong room can move through it.

What the two numbers are actually measuring

An awards list measures who the world is talking about. A receipts table measures how many rooms are still open to have that conversation in. Hong Kong is winning the first and losing ground on the second, and both readings are correct at the same time — the renewal is real, and it's concentrated at a small number of addresses; the contraction is real, and it's spread through the rest of the market. We run rooms in this city, and we'd rather print both lines than pick the one that flatters. A bar that makes a top-50 list a year after signing its lease is the best evidence available that the model still works here. A tenth of the city's bars closing in six months is the best evidence available that it doesn't work for everyone attempting it. Hong Kong's cocktail scene in 2026 isn't one story. It's two, sitting on the same list, the same night.

Frequently asked

How many Hong Kong bars ranked in Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026?
Seven on the main list — Bar Leone (No. 3), Gokan (No. 22), Coa (No. 24), Mius (No. 36), Argo (No. 37), Montana (No. 47) and Penicillin (No. 49) — plus three more on the extended 51–100 list: The Opposites (No. 54), The Savory Project (No. 60) and Tell Camellia (No. 81). That's eleven awards across ten named venues once special-category wins are included [Asia's 50 Best Bars, 28 Jul 2026; afoodieworld, 29 Jul 2026].
Where was the Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 ceremony held?
At Wynn Palace in Macau, on 28 July 2026. That's separate from The World's 50 Best Bars 2025 ceremony, held in Hong Kong at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal on 8 October 2025, where Bar Leone was named World's Best Bar.
Is Hong Kong's bar industry growing or shrinking right now?
Both readings hold at once. Hong Kong's restaurant sector grew 1.1% in receipts in Q1 2026, but bar receipts specifically fell 4.0% in value and 3.9% in volume — the steepest drop of any category tracked — and roughly 120 bars, about a tenth of the city's total, closed in the first half of 2025 [C&SD, 6 May 2026; The Standard, 4 Feb 2026].
What connects Bar Leone and Montana?
The same founder. Bar Leone's founder co-founded Montana with his co-founder in 2025, two years after opening the bar that would be named The World's Best Bar in October 2025. Montana ranked No. 47 on Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 within its first year of trading.
Has Bar Leone expanded outside Hong Kong?
Yes. It opened a Shanghai outpost in the second half of 2025, after taking the World's Best Bar title, carrying its no-reservations, published-recipes format to a second city.
