A First Night In Hong Kong Runs Harbour To Lan Kwai Fong, In Four Stops Before The 1am Last Train
The order that works is harbour, dinner, Bar Leone, then Lan Kwai Fong — not the reverse. Get the sequence right and the whole night fits inside the city's transport hours; get it wrong and you're stranded uphill after the trains stop.

The harbourfront comes first, while the light show is still worth seeing
Central Harbourfront, the reclaimed waterfront strip beside the ferry piers, faces Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon across Victoria Harbour, and it's the view most first-timers save for a rooftop bar later in the night. It doesn't need one: the promenade is open and free, and the Symphony of Lights still runs across the skyline nightly at 8pm — though the government has confirmed the 22-year-old show will be retired in the second half of 2026, with no final date named yet, so catch it while it lasts. Cross to Tsim Sha Tsui and back on the Star Ferry while it's still running — the Central–Tsim Sha Tsui route's last sailing is around 11:30pm, well before Lan Kwai Fong gets busy — and the harbour becomes the opening scene of the night rather than something glimpsed from a taxi window on the way home.
Dinner sits at the top of an escalator, not a hill
From the harbourfront, the walk up to SoHo — literally south of Hollywood Road — runs through the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator, the covered outdoor system that switches direction at 10am and runs uphill until midnight. It's the reason SoHo became a restaurant strip at all: before the escalator existed, the hillside above Hollywood Road was mostly walk-up flats, not tables. Ride it up rather than climb it, eat somewhere with a kitchen still firing after 9pm, and treat the escalator as the transition it is — SoHo for dinner, then back down toward Central and Sheung Wan for the first drink.
Bar Leone was named the world's best bar in 2025, and it takes no reservations
The World's 50 Best Bars named Bar Leone, on Bridges Street on the Sheung Wan side of Central, the World's Best Bar for 2025 — the first time the title has gone to a Hong Kong address. It's also one of seven Hong Kong bars on this year's Asia's 50 Best Bars list, revealed in Macau on 28 July 2026. That status makes the short detour off the escalator route worth it, but the room is small and its own door policy is blunt: no reservations, open every day from 5pm. It fills fast once the after-work crowd lands, so the sequencing matters — go early, before the queue builds and before Lan Kwai Fong does, and treat it as the drink before the last stop rather than after it.
Lan Kwai Fong has been the last stop since before most visitors were born
The cluster of bars around D'Aguilar Street, a few minutes downhill from SoHo, has been Hong Kong's original nightlife core since the 1980s, and it's still where the night concentrates once SoHo's kitchens close and Bridges Street quiets down. It's louder and later than either the harbourfront or SoHo, which is exactly the point of putting it last rather than first — arrive at 9pm and you're leaving just as it gets good.
The MTR sets the deadline, not the bars
Hong Kong's trains run on a roughly 6am-to-1am cycle, and the last train from any single station is usually earlier than that citywide range, not later — so the working rule is to be moving toward Central or Sheung Wan station well before 1am, not at it. Miss it and the fallback is a cross-harbour taxi, not a train timed to the minute. The Star Ferry closes earlier still, at 11:30pm, which is exactly why it belongs at the start of the night and not the end.

Frequently asked
- What time does the Hong Kong MTR stop running?
- Trains operate on a roughly 6am-to-1am cycle systemwide. The last train from any specific station is typically earlier than 1am, so plan to be at Central or Sheung Wan station well before then rather than counting on that citywide figure.
- Is Bar Leone, the World's Best Bar, open every night?
- Yes — it's open every day from 5pm and takes no reservations, at 11–15 Bridges Street on the Sheung Wan side of Central. Because the room is small and doesn't take bookings, go early, before the after-work crowd fills it.
- What time does the last Star Ferry run between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui?
- About 11:30pm, per the route's published timetable — earlier than the MTR's cutoff, which is why the harbour crossing works best as the first stop of the night, not the last.
